Hundreds of members of the community gathered at the Iglesia Jesucristo es el Señor Church in Elizabeth today to work towards immigration reform and hear testimonials from individuals whose families have been shattered by immigrant raids and deportations.
The Families United Community Gathering on Immigration even was cosponsored by Latino Leadership Alliance of New Jersey and the National Coalition of Latino Clergy and Christian Leaders (CONLAMIC) and supported by many community organizations from across the state.
Alliance President Martin Perez made the following statement: “There are millions of people across the United States who suffer on a daily basis because of an immigration system that stopped working years ago. Some families have been broken apart with children forced to live apart from their parents. Still others toil in the shadows hoping they will not be the next victim of a worker raid or an early morning knock on their door by federal immigration officials…”
“Today we want to tell the stories of some of these members of our community with the hope that our legislators will listen and work for comprehensive immigration reform this year. We want to make the public aware of the suffering of these hard-working people. This is an issue that requires attention now.”
Senator Robert Menendez and Congressmen Albio Sires and Luis Gutierrez attended the gathering to hear testimonials from the public.
The Latino Leadership Alliance of New Jersey is the largest Latino advocacy organization in New Jersey, and represents most of the leading organizations across the state. The principal goals of LLANJ are to mobilize and empower the Latino community to obtain political, economic and social equality.
LLANJ was founded in 1999.
